LACROSSE BOOKS ...

Read All About It!As lacrosse grows in popularity throughout the world, more and more books are being published on this fantastic sport. There are books on the history of the game, coaching manuals and several guides aimed at youngsters looking to take up the sport.

Unfortunately you probably won't find too many of these in your local bookshop, so we've reviewed a few that we've read recently that will hopefully give you at least a brief idea of what they are all about and we've added a link to Amazon for each one.

If there are any other lacrosse books that you think we should include in this guide, please let us know

Lacrosse for Dummies
Lacrosse for DummiesIf you've read any of the 'Dummies' Guides before, you will realise that they are a mine of information and certainly not just for 'Dummies'! This guide is written by Jim Hinkson and the editors of 'Inside Lacrosse' magazine and covers a lot of ground with information for players, coaches and spectators. There are chapters on essential skills for players in all positions including the goalkeeper, plus a useful section on coaching tips. A great book, but not entirely focussed on field lacrosse as there is quite a bit of information on Box lacrosse too.
Lacrosse In Action
Lacrosse In Action Aimed squarely at younger readers, this is a softback 32 page book which aims to provide an overview of the game and some very basic beginners tips. Nicely illustrated throughout, the book does have some handy hints and background that will appeal to new players, but there are better guides out there if you are looking for more detail. An inexpensive stocking filler for Christmas or a birthday present though.
Lacrosse-The Player's Handbook
Lacrosse-The Player's Handbook A recent (2008) publication and primarily intended for young players (under 15), this book focusses on the Junior game for both Boys and Girls. The author note: "Prospective players - along with parents, and trainers - can rely on this definitive illustrated guide, which captures all the visual excitement of the game while delivering authoritative information on everything from the official rules, necessary gear, and safety precautions to the finer points of field tactics and training". We liked this book, it's a good read and well illustrated throughout, though bear in mind that it is primarily aimed at US players.
Lacrosse: Technique and Tradition
An update of the classic lacrosse book by Bob Scott, the Second Edition is authored by the most famous coach in the game: David Pietramala of Johns Hopkins University. Dave and co-author Neil Grauer have reworked every chapter with updated information on rules, equipment, preparation, tactics and techniques. There is a fascinating history of the game itself, a section on Johns Hopkins contributions to lacrosse, plus a fascinating insight into their 2005 Championship winning year. A really great read, and though relatively expensive in the UK in hardback form, the book is also available in a softcover edition which is considerably cheaper. Our view? - A 'must' read if you are serious about the sport.
Lacrosse: North America's Game
Lacrosse: North America's Game A lavishly illustrated 320 page coffee table style book that takes you on a visual journey through the 'fastest game on two feet'. This is a beautifully produced book with chapters dedicated to the sport's Native American roots, men's and women's college, the pro indoor and outdoor games, Canadian and international lacrosse, the final four, summer ball, the lacrosse industry, culture, and the modern athlete. Our view? - It's expensive, but well worth the asking price and a book that lacrosse enthusiasts will return to time and time again.
